The Sutherland Knights failed at their attempt to repeat as New York State Class A Champions by losing 8-2 to Burnt Hills. B. Kaczka led the offense with a 3 for 3 day with a run scored.

The Knights finished the season 24-3 which ties the school record for wins.

Knights Advance to State Championship

Behind the strong pitching of M. Gibbs and the bat of Z. Salvia, the Sutherland Knights advanced to the Class A State Championship Game. Gibbs continued his string of outstanding starts by defeating Levittown Division 3-1 with a complete game three hitter. The victory was Gibbs 8th win of 2011 and marks the first time that a Sutherland starter won 8 or more games without a loss.

The Knights got on the board first when B. Kaczka walked and then scored on Z. Salvia's long two-run homerun to left. Levittown pushed a run across in the third inning only to see the Knights answer with a run of their own when J. Swisher doubled and then scored on Salvia's sacrifice fly.

Levittown put two runners on with one out in the fifth inning before an 1 1/2 hour rain delay interrupted play. Gibbs came back after the rain stopped and got a fly ball and then picked off a runner to get out of the jam.

Salvia went 1 for 1 with a sacrifice fly, walk and two-run homerun and three runs batted in.

The Knights are 24-2.

Knights shutout Hamburg 6-0, Advance to NYS Final Four

The Sutherland Knights defeated the Hamburg Bulldogs (Section VI) 6-0 in the Far West Regional and earned a spot in the New York State Class A Final Four in Binghamton on June 11.

The Knights used a J. Swisher RBI single and Z. Salvia two-run double in the third to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. The Knights then tacked another run on to make it 4-0 in the fourth when J. Kay singled home G. Heyman, who also singled.

It became 6-0 in the fifth when Salvia's groundball to second was misplayed allowing H. Merrill and B. Kaczka to score.

Heyman went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

M. Gibbs threw a complete game four hitter with three strikeouts for his 7th win of the 2011 season. Gibbs pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the first when S. Lowe turned a 5-3 double play to end the inning.

Sutherland will take on Division HS on Saturday at 10 am at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton in the NYS Class A Semi-Final.

This is Sutherland's 3rd trip in 4 seasons to Binghamton for the NYS Final Four.

Knights Beat Batavia in Walk-Off for Class A Title

The Sutherland Knights won their sixth Section V Class A Championship in seven years by defeating the Batavia Blue Devils 6-5 on a walk-off misplayed groundball with two outs in the seventh.

The Knights battled back from a 5 to 2 deficit going into the bottom of the fifth inning when J. Swisher hit a two-run homerun to right field to pull Sutherland within a run. B. Kaczka followed with a double to the left field gap and then stole third base. Z. Salvia then scored Kaczka with an RBI groundout to tie the score 5-5.

Sutherland reliever W. Doggett held the Blue Devils scoreless in his two innings of relief and escaped a 1st and 3rd jam in the seventh. In the home half of the seventh, Kaczka reached on a fielder's choice and Salvia walked with two outs to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. N. Barra then hit a hard groundball to second base that got through the second baseman's legs allowing Kaczka to score the winning run.

G. Heyman hit a two-run homerun in the second inning to give the Knights an early 2-0 lead.

Swisher went 2 for 3 with a double and a two run homerun to earn the Sectional Final Most Valuable Player Award. N. Barra also had two hits and a run scored for Sutherland.

W. Doggett picked up the win with two innings of shutout relief.

Sutherland is currently 22-2 and takes on Hamburg (Section VI) on Monday June 6th at 7 pm at Dwyer Stadium (Batavia)

Knights Roll Past Brighton 19-4

The Sutherland Knights defeated the Brighton Barons yesterday 19-4 at McDonough Park in Geneva, NY in the Section V Class A Semi-final. The Knights pounded out 21 hits and scored in every inning in the rout. Every Sutherland starter had at least one hit, RBI and run scored.

B. Kaczka went 3 for 3 with two doubles, 4 RBIs and a run scored. G. Heyman went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored. J. Swisher went 3 for 5 with two doubles a run scored and an RBI. S. Lowe went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Zach Salvia hit a long three-run homerun in the 5th inning that blew the game wide open.

M. Gibbs picked up his sixth win of the 2011 season by going 5 innings and giving up two earned runs. Gibbs had his 25 inning scoreless streak snapped in the second inning. Gibbs defeated Brighton twice this season and gave up a total of 2 earned runs vs. the Barons in 11 innings pitched.

Sutherland plays Batavia at McDonough Park on Friday at 7 30 pm in the Class A Final.

Sutherland blanks Pal-Mac 4-0

The Sutherland Knights shut out Pal-Mac 4-0 Friday in the Section V Class A Quarterfinals at Sargent Field. The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a B. Kaczka double to left scoring H. Merrill and then the Red Raiders promptly overthrew third base allowing Kaczka to score. The Red Raiders managed only one scoring threat in the sixth inning when they put runners at 1st and 3rd with 1 out. That threat was quickly erased when Knights starter M. Gibbs induced a weak groundball to Kaczka who touched second and threw on to Z. Salvia for the double play.

S. Lowe added two insurance runs in the home half of the sixth inning when he hit a two-run double over the center fielder's head scoring G. Heyman and J. Kay, who both singled.

Gibbs pitched a complete game two-hitter while striking out five for his fifth win of the season. Heyman went 2 for 3 with a run scored and Kaczka went 1 for 2 with two runs scored.

Sutherland is currently 20-2 and plays Brighton on Tuesday at Geneva's McDonough Park vs. Brighton in the Section V Class A Semi-Final.

Knights defeat Lancers 20-2

The Sutherland Knights beat the Eastridge Lancers 20-2 yesterday in the first round of the Section V Class A Sectionals. B. Kaczka led the way for Sutherland with two homeruns and four runs scored. Kaczka hit a two-run shot in the first inning and a three-run shot in the second inning.

G. Heyman also had a big day offensively for the Knights with a 4 for 4 game with 3 runs scored and 4 runs driven in. H. Merrill and S. Lowe also had two hits and two runs scored apiece.

R. Hallowell pitched four innings of one run ball for his fourth win of 2011 and his third win over Eastridge this season.

Sutherland is now 19-2 and hosts Pal-Mac on Friday in the Quarterfinals.

Sutherland defeats McQuaid Jesuit 7-2

Behind the strong pitching of J. Kay and W. Doggett, the Sutherland Knights held the McQuaid Jesuit Knights to three hits and defeated them 7-2. Kay pitched 5 2/3 innings of 1 hit ball for his sixth victory of the season. Doggett came on in relief of Kay with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning with the score 5-2. Doggett induced a ground ball to get out of the jam and pitched a scoreless seventh for his first save of the season.

Z. Salvia and H. Merrill both had big run scoring base hits in the later innings to pad Sutherland's lead over McQuaid. Salvia's was a long two-run double in the fifth inning and Merrill hit a two run single in the sixth inning. M. Barra and S. Lowe also contributed key RBI base hits in the early innings for Sutherland. Barra finished the day 2 for 2 with a run scored.

Sutherland finishes the season 18-2.

Knights beat Eastridge 18-2

The Sutherland Knights beat the Eastridge Lancers 18-2 at Sargent Field on Saturday. The Knights pounded out 14 hits and had 5 hitters register 2 hits on the day. N. Barra, G. Heyman, B. Kaczka, J. Kay, and S. Lowe each had two hits with each of them scoring at least two runs apiece. Lowe and Kay also had two runs batted in and M. Barra scored three runs.

R. Hallowell pitched four innings of two hit ball for his third win of the season. Relievers S. Pelletier and A. DePaolis threw three innings of scoreless relief for Sutherland.

Sutherland is now 17-2 and finishes a perfect 8-0 in Divisional play.

Knights Blank Barons 6-0

The Sutherland Knights defeated divisional rival Brighton 6-0 last night at Buckland Park in the continuation of the suspended game played May 13th. Senior M. Gibbs held Brighton scoreless for six innings and picked up his fourth win of 2011. Gibbs pitched in relief of R. Hallowell who held Brighton scoreless in the first inning before the rains came last Friday. Gibbs scattered five hits over his six innings of work and pitched out of jams all night including five innings where the Barons put runners in scoring position.

G. Heyman got the Knights on the board in the fourth with a bases loaded walk. The Knights pushed across three runs in the fifth when H. Merrill doubled and scored on a wild pitch, J. Swisher walked and scored on B. Kaczka's long triple to right and Kaczka scored on another Brighton miscue to make it 4-0. In the sixth pinch hitter M. Barra singled and then again scored on a throwing error from the catcher to make it 5-0.

The Knights manufactured one more run in the seventh when Kaczka walked, stole second and third and then scored on another throwing error.

Kaczka and Swisher both reached base three times in the game and scored two runs apiece.

The Knights have clinched their sixth Division III championship in seven seasons. Sutherland currently has a record of 16-2 overall and 7-0 in Division III. Sutherland hosts Eastridge and McQuaid in a doubleheader at Sargent Field tomorrow. Game 1 vs. Eastridge begins at 10:00 am and Game 2 vs. McQuaid begins at 2:00 pm. Senior Day festivities begins at 1:00 pm.

Sutherland rolls over Fairport 11-4

The Sutherland Knights defeated Class AAA's Fairport Red Raiders 11 to 4 at Sargent Field today. Z. Salvia led the offense with a 3 for 3 day with 5 runs batted in and two runs scored. Salvia's long three run homerun to left field chased Fairport's starter and blew open a three run game in the fourth inning.

J. Swisher and N. Barra both had two hits apiece with Swisher having three runs scored and two runs batted in. B. Kaczka also had a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Sutherland sophomore W. Doggett threw six innings for his first Varsity win.

Sutherland is now 15 and 2 on the season and 6-0 in Division III.

Sutherland defeats Mendon 6-2

The Sutherland Knights defeated cross-town rival Pittsford Mendon 6-2 yesterday at Mendon High School. Junior J. Kay threw a complete game with four strikeouts for his team leading fifth win of 2011. Z. Salvia led the offensive attack with a 3 for 4 day including an RBI double in the first inning and and RBI single in the sixth inning.

B. Kaczka and G. Heyman both contributed run scoring doubles with Heyman's plating two runs with two outs in the fourth inning. N. Barra had two hits and two runs scored to round out he offensive attack for Sutherland.

Sutherland is now 14-2 overall and 6-0 in Division III.

Knights shutout Cougars 10-0

Senior M. Gibbs threw a complete game shutout to lead Sutherland to a 10-0 win over HFL. Gibbs surrendered only three hits and didn't allow the Cougars to put a runner in scoring position in his seven innings of work.

The Knights pounded out 13 hits and scored in five of the seven innings. R. Hallowell led the offense with a 3 for 4 day with two RBIs and two runs scored. N. Barra, J. Swisher and J. Kay all contributed two hits apiece with Barra having 2 RBIs and Kay scoring two runs.

The Knights are now 13-2 and take on Pittsford Mendon today at 4:30 at Mendon High School.

Knights defeat EFA 9-3

The Sutherland Knights defeated Elmira Free Academy 9 to 3 behind an offensive attack that saw five starters register 2 hits apiece. J. Swisher, B. Kaczka, Z. Salvia, J. Kay and R. Hallowell each had two hits apiece with Salvia, Kay and Hallowell each registering two runs batted in. Kaczka also had three runs scored and Swisher and Salvia contributed two runs scored apiece.

J. Kay gave up three runs in four innings for his fourth win of the season. Relievers S. Pelletier and A. DePaolis combined for three scoreless innings in relief for Sutherland.

The Knights used an 18 hit offensive attack, which included three homeruns, to defeat Divisional III opponent Eastridge 12-3. G. Heyman and Z. Salvia both had three hits apiece with Heyman hitting a three-run homerun and Salvia hitting a solo homerun.

S. Lowe, J. Swisher, J. Kay and N. Barra all had two hits apiece with Lowe hitting a three-run homerun.

R. Hallowell threw 5 innings giving up three unearned runs for his second win of the season. S. Pelletier and A. DePaolis both threw scoreless innings in relief for Sutherland.

Kaczka had two hits including a double and a triple to go along with two RBIs and two runs scored. J. Kay also had two hits to round out the offensive attack.

Kaczka Walk-off Beats Brighton

The Sutherland Knights defeated divisional rival Brighton 5-4 on a two-out walk-off three-run home run by B. Kaczka. The Knights trailed 4-2 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when N. Barra walked and J. Swisher was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Kaczka, who promptly hit a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence.

Z. Salvia hit a two-run home run in the first inning to get the Knights on the board. Kaczka finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. J. Swisher also had two hits to round out the offense.

Sutherland is now 9-2 and plays Greece Odyssey on Saturday in non-league action.

Knights defeat Titans 4-2

Behind the strong pitching of J. Kay, the Knights defeated Webster Thomas 4-2 at the Basket Road Baseball Complex yesterday. Kay threw a complete game with seven strikeouts for his third win of 2011. Kay allowed two runs, one of which was unearned, on nine hits.

The Knights got on the board first when Kay hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring N. Barra who had singled. The Knights then scored two more in the second when Barra tripled to centerfield.

Sutherland tacked on one more insurance run on G. Heyman's based loaded walk in the sixth inning.

Barra went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead the offense.

The Knights are now 8-2 and host the Brighton Barons on Friday in a divisional game.

Knights win last two in Myrtle Beach

The Sutherland Knights strung together two wins at the end of their spring trip with wins over Brockport and Elizabeth (NJ) on Thursday and Friday at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. On Thursday the Knights battled back from a 5 to 3 deficit to win 10 to 7. N. Barra and Z. Salvia both had two hits and two runs batted in to lead the offense. G. Heyman and S. Lowe also contributed two hits apiece with Lowe also scoring two runs.

Reliever R. Hallowell threw 2 2/3 innings for his first Varsity win. A. DePaolis threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his fourth save of the season.

On Friday the Knights defeated the Elizabeth Minutemen (NJ) 9-3. Starting pitcher J. Kay picked up his second win of the week by going 5 innings and giving up two earned runs. B. Kaczka, N. Barra, G. Heyman and P. Ciaccia all had two hits apiece to lead the offense. Ciaccia also had two runs batted in and Heyman scored three runs. M. Ricci had a double and two RBIs to round out the hitting attack for the Knights.

Reliever S. Pelletier threw two scoreless innings for Sutherland.

Sutherland is now 7-2 and takes on Division III rival Brighton on Monday at Sargent Field.

Knights surrender 8 run lead and lose 11-10 to Fairport

The Sutherland Knights were unable to hold an 9-1 lead and lost 11-10 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to the Fairport Red Raiders. The Red Raiders registered 19 hits off of Sutherland pitchers. J. Swisher had two homeruns to pace the offense and N. Barra contributed two hits.

Sutherland has dropped two in a row and is now 5-2.

Sutherland loses to Lenape 7-5

The Sutherland Knights started out their Spring Trip in Myrtle Beach with a 10-0 victory over Whitney Young (IL). Junior J. Kay threw a complete game three-hitter with three strikeouts for his first varsity victory. He also contributed a 2 for 3 day at the plate with 2 RBIs. Also pacing the offense were N. Barra and Z. Salvia who each had 2 hits. Barra also had two runs scored and Salvia had three runs batted in.

The Knights take on Lenape (NJ) tomorrow at 12:00 pm at the Cal Ripken Experience.

Sutherland Beats HFL 8-2

The Sutherland Knights stayed unbeated with an 8-2 victory over Monroe County Division III rival, HFL, Thursday at Sargent Field. The Knights fell behind early 1-0 after 1 but battled back to tie the game at 1 when a G. Heyman groundball was misplayed allowing B. Kaczka to score.

In the third, Sutherland used run scoring singles by Z. Salvia and Heyman to extend the lead to 3-1. The Cougars used a Sutherland infield miscue in the fifth inning to close the lead to 3-2. In the home half of the fifth, J. Swisher singled and then scored on Salvia's double to left to make the score 4-2.

In the sixth inning the Knights put the Cougars away for good with a four run inning. N. Barra led off the inning with a long double to right field and then was bunted to third by pinch hitter P. Ciaccia. Pinch hitter M. Barra then followed with a single scoring his brother and making the score 5-2. A double by H. Merrill put two runners at second and third for Kackza, who hit a homerun over the left field wall to cap the inning and make the final 8-2.

Sutherland ace J. Meuchner threw 6 innings of three hit ball with six strikeouts for his third win of the season. Reliever W. Doggett threw a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts.

Salvia led the way with a 3 for 3 day with 2 RBIs. Kaczka went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs and Merrile with 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.

The Knights are now 2-0 in Division III and 4-0 overall. Sutherland now travels to Myrtle Beach for 5 games next week.

Sutherland outlasts Batavia 9-7

The Sutherland Knights defeated the Batavia Blue Devils yesterday 9-7 on a windy day at Sargent Field. The Knights fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first courtesy of two hits, two hit batsman and two walks. Sutherland came roaring back in the home half of the 1st inning to tie it thanks to a B. Kaczka single and Z. Salvia two-run homerun.

The Blue Devils again took the lead in the second when they pieced together a walk, a hit, another hit batsman and a Sutherland miscue to go up 4-3.

In the home half of the second, the Knights used walks to S. Lowe and H. Merrill and singles by J. Swisher and Kaczka, to take a 5-4 lead.

The Blue Devils again tied the game in the fourth with a walk, a wild pitch and an error. Sutherland took the lead for good in the fourth when Kaczka hit a two-run homerun and Salvia had another run scoring base hit to make the score 8-4. An RBI groundout by N. Barra in the bottom of the 6th, extended the lead to 9-5.

The Blue Devils tacked on two runs off of closer A. DePaolis in the seventh to make the final 9-7.

M. Gibbs notched his first varsity win by going four innings and giving up 1 run while striking out six Blue Devils. DePaolis relieved Gibbs with two outs in the sixth inning and the bases loaded and got a pop-up in the infield to get out of the jam. DePaolis pitched 1.1 innings and gave up two runs for his third save of the season.

Salvia led the offense with three hits and four RBIs including a two-run homerun. Kaczka and Merrill both had two hits apiece with Kaczka scoring two runs and knocking in three runs including a two-run homerun. Merrill also scored three runs and had five stolen bases.

The Knights are now 3-0 and face rival HFL on Wednesday at HFL.

Knights upend Rush-Henrietta 5-2

The Sutherland Knights defeated the Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets 5-2 at Sargent Field on Saturday.

The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead with three straight hits in the 3rd inning courtesy of a H. Merrill single, and back-to-back doubles from J. Swisher and B. Kaczka. The Royal Comets used three walks in the fourth inning to narrow the lead to 2-1 but in the fifth inning, Sutherland used run scoring base hits from G. Heyman and Z. Salvia to extend the lead to 5-1.

The Royal Comets once again took advantage of a couple of walks to plate a run in the sixth and make the score 5-2. RH couldn't get any closer as Sutherland closer A. DePaolis threw a scoreless 7th for his second save of the season.

J. Meuchner threw 4 innings while striking out 7 Royal Comets for his second win of 2011. W. Doggett pitched 1.2 innings of relief, giving up 1 run, before giving way to DePaolis with two outs in the 6th.

S. Lowe, J. Swisher and H. Merrill each had two hits apiece to pace the Knights. Swisher also had two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI and Merrill had two runs scored. Kaczka, Heyman and Salvia all had run scoring singles for Sutherland.

Sutherland is now 2-0 and hosts Batavia on Monday at 4:30 pm at Sargent Field.

Knights Open Season With Win

The Knights defeated cross-town rival Pittsford Mendon 3-1 at Sargent Field yesterday during the First Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game.

Sutherland fell behind early 1-0 on a run scoring single in the 3rd inning. In the 4th, J. Swisher singled and G. Heyman walked to put two runners on for Z. Salvia, who doubled off the left field wall to tie the score 1-1. J. Kay then followed with a two run single to make the score 3-1. The Vikings sent the tying run to the plate in the 7th inning, only to have him erased on a game ending 1-6-3 double play.

J. Meuchner pitched 5 innings, giving up 1 hit while striking out 8 for the win. A. DePaolis pitched 2 innings of no-hit ball while striking out 2 for his first career save.

The Knights are 1-0 and take on the Rush Henrietta Royal Comets on Friday at Sargent Field.

Jon Meyer Named Empire 8 Player of the Week

Rochester Institute of Technology catcher and 2007 Sutherland grad Jon Meyer was named Empire 8 Player of the Week for the week of March 21st.

Meyer hit .750 (9-for 12) with eight runs batted in as RIT won two of three games. He went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the Tigers’ 5-1 win over Medaille in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader and followed that with a 4-for-4 performance with a double and RBI in a 6-4 victory. On Sunday, he went 3-for-4 and drove in five of the Tigers’ six runs in a 10-6 loss to Brockport.

Meyer was the starting catcher on the Sutherland 2006 and 2007 Section V Class A Championship teams.

Senior centerfielder A. Freida broke two Section V Hit By Pitch records this season. Freida is now #1 in Section V history in HBPs in a season with 18 and his 14straight games with a HBP is also a record.

Freida also moved into the top 5 for career HBPs with 21. His 21 ousted former Knights All-County second baseman Jeff Becker (2005-2007) from the top 5. Becker was hit 20 times for his career.

Becker and fellow Sutherland Alum and AGR centerfielder Johnny Brill (2007-2009) are among the leaders for hit by pitches in a season.

KNIGHTS WIN NEW YORK STATE CLASS A CHAMPIONSHIP

The Sutherland Knights baseball team won the first New York State Baseball Championship in school history yesterday when they defeated Whitesboro and Wantaugh at the State Championships in Binghamton.

In Game 1, the Knights fell behind early 1-0 but mounted a comeback in the third inning when A. Freida was hit by a pitch and B. Kaczka walked to put two runners on for Z. Salvia. Salvia then followed with a long homerun to left field to put the Knights up 3-1.

In the fourth inning, pitcher J. Meuchner singled to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second by H. Merrill. A single by N. Flemister and a double by Kaczka plated both runners for a 5-1.

Reliever Meuchner shut the Warriors down for six innings for the victory. Meuchner struck out seven during his six shutout innings. The Knights also recorded four outs via pick-offs to make the Warriors running game, which had stolen 102 bases going into the game, a non-factor.

Flemister went 3 for 4 with an RBI and run scored and Meuchner had 2 hits and a run scored.

In the NYS Championship Game the Knights battled Wantaugh out of Long Island. Sutherland jumped out to an early 2-0 when Merrill led off with a single and stole second. A walk to Freida and base hit by Flemister loaded the bases with one out. Brad Kaczka then hit a deep sacrifice fly ball to centerfield that scored both Merrill and a hustling Freida from second base.

In the third inning, G. Heyman doubled to left and advanced to third on N. Barra's groundout. J. Swisher then followed with another deep sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Heyman and give the Knights a 3-0 advantage. The Warriors threatend in the home half of the third but Swisher threw a runner out at the plate on a groundball and Kaczka threw another runner out at the plate to end the inning on a failed steal of home.

In the sixth inning, Salvia singled and gave way to pinch runner S. Lowe. Heyman then followed with his third extra base hit of the day, this time an opposite field homerun over the fence in leftfield to make the score 5-0.

Wantaugh came back in the home half of the sixth when they scored four runs off of Knights starter M. Barra, who had kept the Warriors' hitters off balance for 5 2/3 innings. Barra gave way to reliever Meuchner with the tying run on second base and two outs. Meuchner promptly picked off the Wantaugh base runner to end the threat.

In the seventh inning, Freida led off with a single and advanced to second on Flemister's walk. Kaczka then followed with a hard groundball that the Wantaugh pitcher tried to turn into an inning ending 1-4-3 double play but Flemister broke up the double play and forced an errant throw that scored Freida to give the Knights a much needed insurance run and make the score 6-4.

In the seventh, the Warriors edged closer with two hits to make it 6-5 and they put the tying and winning runners in scoring position with two outs but Meuchner got a slow groundball to Merrill to end the game and bring a New York State Class A Baseball Championship to Pittsford.

M. Barra got his fifth win of the season and Meuchner picked up his third save of 2010. Meuchner finished with a win and a save in the two games.

Heyman went 3 for 3 including 2 doubles and a homerun with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Merrill also helped pace the offense with two hits and a run scored and Freida contributed a hit and two runs scored.

The Knights finished the season with a school record 24 wins.

Knights knock-off Albion 6-2 in Far West Regional

The Sutherland Knights beat previously undefeated Albion (Section VI) 6-2 at Coca Cola Park in Buffalo late last night in the NYS Far West Regional. This win punched the Knights ticket to the NYS Final Four in Binghamton this weekend.

The Knights jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when N. Flemister singled, stole second and scored on B. Kaczka's RBI single. Z. Salvia then followed with a double to right field, moving Kaczka to third for G. Heyman, who delivered an RBI groundout.

The Purple Eagles got on the board courtesy of a homerun to left to cut the lead to 2-1. The Knights responded with two more runs in the top of the 5th when H. Merrill doubled and A. Freida singled to put two runners in scoring position for Flemister who hit a hot shot to short that was misplayed allowing both runners to score and make it 4-1.

In the 6th, Heyman singled to left and N. Barra's long fly to center was misplayed putting two runners in scoring position for M. Barra who delivered a two-run single back through the middle to extend the lead to 6-1.

In the seventh, Albion pushed a run across and put two runners on with no-outs but closer J. Meuchner got a 4-6-3 double play and a strikeout to end the threat.

N. Barra pitched six innings striking out 7 Purple Eagles for his 10th win of the season. Barra's 10 wins pushes him past former Sutherland Baseball All-Greater Rochester pitchers David Ploof, Mike Weingarten and Kyle Menard, who all had 9 wins in a season, for what is thought to be a Sutherland Single Season Record.

The Knights are now 22-2 and will play the winner of tonight's Whitesboro vs. Ichabod Crane game on Saturday at 1:00 pm in the NYS Class A Semi-final at Sylvester Field at Union-Endicott HS.

Sutherland Stuns Victor For Class A Title

The Sutherland Knights won the Class A Sectional Championship with a dramatic 7-6 victory over rival Victor at McDonough Park in Geneva last night.

Sutherland fell behind 6-0 going into the bottom of the 5th inning but as they did versus Aquinas in the semi-final, they mounted a comeback. CF A. Freida led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on catcher N. Flemister's single. A groundout moved both runners into scoring position for Z. Salvia, who singled to score both runners and cut the deficit to 6-2.

In the sixth, the Knights continued their comeback and tied the game at 6. Walks to J. Meuchner, A. Freida and Flemister loaded the bases with 1 out. Another walk to B. Kaczka forced in a run to make it 6-3. A Salvia single and G. Heyman groundout plated two more runs to cut the lead to 6-5. N. Barra then followed with a RBI single to right field to tie the game.

In the seventh, the Blue Devils put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out and Sutherland reliever Meuchner gave way to N. Barra, who got a strikeout and groundout to get out of the jam.

In the bottom of the seventh, M. Barra led off with a single to left field to put the winning run on with no outs. Pinch runner S. Lowe came on and was sacrificed to second by H. Merrill. A passed ball and walks to Freida and Flemister loaded the bases. The Blue Devils recorded an out but walked Z. Salvia on a full count for the winning run.

Salvia led the offense with a 2 for 4 day with 4 RBIs to be named the Section V Class A Final Player of the Game. Also pacing the offense was Flemister, who went 2 for 2 with 3 walks and 2 runs scored and Freida, who scored two runs.

N. Barra picked up his 9th win of the season by retiring the two hitters in the seventh inning. Meuchner, who kept the Knights in the game with 4 1/3 innings of work, allowed only 2 runs and held the Blue Devils scoreless in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings.

The Knights, who are currently 21-2, will now play Albion (Section VI) in the Far West Regional Monday at 8:30 pm at Coca Cola Field in Buffalo.

NOTE:

This is Sutherland's 5th Section V Class A Championship in 6 seasons and the third time they have defeated Victor in the Class A Final during that stretch.

Knights Roll Over Aquinas 9-4

The Sutherland Knights avenged last year's Class A Finals loss to Aquinas by defeating them 9-4 last night at McDonough Park.

The Knights fell behind 3-0 going into the bottom of the second but the Knights' bats responded with a seven run second inning to knock out Aquinas' starter and put the game away. OF G. Heyman started off the second with a long homerun to RF and starting pitcher N. Barra and 3B J. Swisher followed with base hits to put two runners in scoring position with no outs.

RF M. Barra followed with a sacrifice fly scoring N. Barra to make the score 3-2. 2B H. Merrill promptly delivered a single to left field scoring Swisher to tie the score at 3. A double by catcher N. Flemister scored Merrill and gave the Knights the lead 4-3. SS B. Kaczka then singled to left field scoring Flemister to extend the lead to 5-3.

1B Z. Salvia then delivered a monster home run to centerfield to stake the Knights out to a 7-3 lead.

It stayed 7-3 until the sixth inning when Heyman came through with a big two-out two-run single scoring A. Freida and Flemister who both walked to extend the lead to 9-3.

Aquinas tacked on a run in the seventh but could get no closer than 9-4.

Starting pitcher N. Barra threw a complete game striking out 8 'Lil Irish hitters for his 8th win of 2010. After the Knights offensive outburst in the second, Barra threw four straight scoreless innings and at one point sat down 8 straight AQ hitters.

Salvia went 2 for 2 with a 2B, HR, two RBIs and a run scored and Heyman went 2 for 4 with a HR, three RBIs and a run scored to pace the offense. J. Swisher also went 2 for 2 with a 2B and a run scored.

The Knights are now 20-2 and face the Victor Blue Devils in the Class A Sectional Final Friday at McDonough Park.

Knights Defeat Vikings in Quarterfinal 7-1

The Sutherland Knights used two big innings offensively to defeat rival Pittsford Mendon 7-1 at Sargent Field Friday in the Class A Sectional Quarterfinal. The score was 0-0 going into the home half of the third inning when the Knights got base hits from H. Merrill, B. Kaczka, and Z.Salvia to go with a N. Flemister hit by pitch and two Vikings errors to go up 3-0.

The Vikings cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth only to have Sutherland come back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. An A. Freida hit by pitch, his 17th of the season, along with base hits by Flemister, Kaczka, Salvia, and P. Ciaccia plated the final final four runs of the game.

Sutherland starting pitcher N. Barra notched his seventh win of the season by pitching 5 innings of four hit ball. Reliever J. Meuchner struck out two in two hitless innings for the Knights.

Kaczka led the way offensively with a 3 for 3 day with a run batted in and 2 runs scored. Flemister had 2 hits and 2 runs scored and Salvia had 2 hits, 2 runs batted in and 1 run scored.

Sutherland is now 19-2 and plays defending NYS champion Aquinas Tuesday at 4:30 pm at McDonough Park in Geneva in the Class A Sectional Semi-final.

Sutherland loses to Victor 8-5

The Sutherland Knights lost to the Victor Blue Devils yesterday 8-5 at Sargent Field. The Knights finish the season 18-2.

Knights blank Vikings 4-0

The Sutherland Knights celebrated Senior Day at Sargent Field by shutting out cross-town rival Pittsford Mendon 4-0. Junior right-hander M.Barra threw 5.2 innings for the victory while striking out 8 and allowing 2 hits. Sophomore J. Meuchner picked up his first career save by striking out 3 in his 1.1 innings of work.

The game was tied through 3 but the Knights erupted for 4 runs with two outs to take the lead. Freshman H. Merrill doubled to left-field knocking in Meuchner, who singled, and M. Barra who reached base on a fielder's choice, to make it 2-0. Centerfielder A. Freida then followed with a towering two-run homerun to left to make the final 4-0.

N. Barra and B. Kaczka also chipped in two hits apiece for Sutherland.

Sutherland is now 18-1 and 10-1 in divisional play. Sutherland hosts Victor Friday at 5:00 pm at Sargent Field for the league championship.

Knights beat Eastridge 12-0

The Knights pounded out 15 hits in a 12-0 rain shortened 5 inning victory over Eastridge. N. Barra, M. Barra, H. Merrill and J. Meuchner all registered two hits apiece with N. Barra having 3 RBIs and Merrill picking up 2 RBIs. N. Flemister and G. Heyman both had two run homeruns to round out the offensive attack.

M. Hallowell threw 4 innings of 1 hit ball for his fourth win of the 2010 and M. Gibbs threw a scoreless fifth for Sutherland.

The Knights are 17-1 and 9-1 in Division III.

Sutherland downs Fairport 6-2

Behind the strong pitching of junior right-hander N. Barra, the Sutherland Knights defeated the Fairport Red Raiders 6-2. Barra picked up his sixth win of the season by throwing a complete game five hitter with six strikeouts. Both of the Red Raiders runs were unearned.

The Knights pounded out 10 hits in the game. The game was 1-0 until the fifth inning when Sutherland got run scoring base hits from Z. Salvia, G. Heyman, N. Barra and freshman H. Merrill to break the game open.

Merrill and Salvia led the offense by each going 2 for 3 with an RBI. B. Kaczka and N. Flemister also both had two hits and Kaczka also had two runs scored.

Sutherland is 16-1 and travels to Eastridge to play the Lancers on Tuesday

G. Heyman named Birds Eye Player of the Week

Sutherland sophomore outfielder G. Heyman was named Birds Eye Player of the Week for the week of May 3rd to May 8th. During that week Heyman went 6 for 12 with four doubles, a triple, three runs batted in and two runs scored.

Knights beat Barons 5-3

The Sutherland Knights beat divisional rival Brighton 5-3 at Sargent Field Monday. The Knights used a G. Heyman double, stolen base and sacrifice fly by J. Swisher to take a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until the fifth when a walk, hit by pitch and A. Freida bunt single loaded the bases with 1 out. Shortstop B. Kaczka followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0. Heyman then smacked a two run double, his second of the game, to make the score 5-0.

The Barons hit a three-run-homerun in the sixth but could draw no closer as Sutherland starter M. Barra retired the last four hitters to secure the victory. Barra pitched seven innings, striking out six Barons while surrendering only four hits for his third win of the season.

Heyman led the offense with two doubles, two runs batted in and a run scored and Freida had two hits and a run scored.

Sutherland is now 15-1 and 8-1 in Division III. The Knights travel to Eastridge on Wednesday for a divisional game.

Knights defeat Cougars 5-2

The Sutherland Knights bounced back after a tough loss Wednesday to beat a tough HFL Cougars team, 5 to 2 in Division III action. The Knights got on the board in the first when catcher N. Flemister hit a long homerun to centerfield to make it 1-0. 2B N. Barra followed suit in the second with another solo homerun to centerfield to stake the Knights to a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Sutherland used an A. Freida single and two Cougar miscues to push the lead to 3-0. In the fifth, the Knights used back-to-back doubles by Freida and Flemister to make the score 4-0.

The Cougars closed the gap to 4-2 in the fifth but could get no closer as reliever N. Barra shut the Cougars down the rest of the way. Z. Salvia tacked on a long homerun to centerfield, his sixth of 2010, to make the final 5-2.

J. Swisher earned his first Varsity win with 4.1 gutsy innings of work while Barra struck out five for his second save of the season.

Flemister led the way with three hits including a solo homerun, and RBI double. Swisher and Freida both had two hits with Freida also contributing two runs scored.

The Knights are now 14-1 and 7-1 in Division III.

NOTE:

A. Freida's HBP streak was snapped at 14 games. This streak is the longest in Section V history and is believed to be a record in NYS. Freida has now broken former Sutherland centerfielder Johnny Brill's Section V Hit by Pitch Season Record with 14 in 2010. Brill had 13 in 2009.

G. Heyman tied a NYS record vs. Victor with four doubles in one game. This feat was accomplished one other time in 1990 by Jason Hartman (Saratoga Central Catholic)

Heyman also became the 33rd player in NYS History to register 5 or more hits in a game after he registered four doubles and a triple vs. Victor on Wednesday. On that list is 2008 Sutherland grad Kyle Menard who had five hits in a game his senior year.

Knights lose to Blue Devils 14-13

The Sutherland Knights lost their first game of 2010 to the Victor Blue Devils by the score of 14-13 on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the seventh. The Knights walked 12 batters (two of them intentionally in the seventh) and gave up 11 hits.

G. Heyman was the story of the game for Sutherland with a 5 for 5 game including four doubles, a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored.

Sutherland is now 13-1 and 6-1 in Division III

Freida Ties Brill's Section V Hit By Pitch Record

Sutherland beats Mendon 7-3

The Sutherland Knights beat rival Pittsford Mendon 7-3 in a hard fought battle yesterday at Mendon High School. N. Barra pitched a complete game for his fifth win of 2010. Barra scattered six hits and struck out 13 Vikings in the victory.

N. Flemister led the way with a hit and three runs scored for the Knights. M. Barra, J. Meuchner and A. Freida all had a hit and a run scored. G. Heyman contributed an RBI single for the Knights.

Sutherland is now 13-0 and 6-0 in Division III. The Knights travel to Victor at 5:00 pm Wednesday for a divisional matchup.

Salvia Named Birds Eye Player of the Week

Junior first baseman Z. Salvia has been named Birds Eye Player of the Week for the week of April 26th to May 1st. During that week, Salvia went 6 for 10 with 3 homeruns, 11 RBIs and 5 runs scored.

Sutherland beats Odyssey 9-1

The Sutherland Knights defeated Division III opponent Greece Odyssey behind the strong pitching of M. Hallowell who earned his third win of the season by going six innings with eight strikeouts.

Z. Salvia busted open a 3-0 game in the home half of the fifth with a long grand slam to left field. Salvia also had a sacrifice fly in the first inning to finish with five runs batted in.

N. Flemister also had a solid day at the plate with two hits and a run scored and A. Freida went 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Freida also was hit by pitch in the first inning which is his 12th straight game with a HBP.

The Knights are now 5-0 in Divisional play and 12-0 overall. Sutherland takes on rival Mendon on Monday at Mendon HS at 5:00 pm.

Sutherland Squeaks by Batavia 2-1

Behind a strong pitching effort of M. and N. Barra, the Sutherland Knights beat the Batavia Blue Devils 2-1. M. Barra started the game for the Knights and went 4 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 unearned run. N. Barra relieved his brother and threw 3 innings giving up no hits and striking out 4 Blue Devils for his fourth win of 2010.

The Knights got on the board first when Z. Salvia singled to lead off the second and then scored on a Blue Devil error to make the score 1-0. The Blue Devils used a walk, hit and Sutherland error to tie the score at 1 in the third inning.

In the sixth Sutherland pushed across the game winning run when N. Flemister singled and then advanced to third on Salvia's second hit of the game. G. Heyman then followed with an RBI groundout to score Flemister and make the final score 2-1.

Salvia led the offense with two hits and a run scored. Flemister had a hit and run scored and threw out a would be Blue Devil basestealer at second in the bottom of the seventh to help secure the victory.

Sutherland is now 11-0 and 4-0 in Division III. The Knights are back in action Friday at Sargent Field at 4:30 vs. Greece Odyssey

Knights Beat Cadets 17-1

The Sutherland Knights offense busted out for 16 hits in a 17-1 victory over the Hilton Cadets. Hitters 2-3-4-5-6 once again did most of the damage for the Knights.

Z. Salvia led the hitting attack with three hits and six RBIs. Two of his hits were tape measure homeruns in the 1st and 2nd innings. Salvia also scored three runs.

N. Flemister had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored and B. Kaczka had three hits, an RBI and two runs scored. G. Heyman had three doubles, two RBIs, and a run scored and N. Barra had a long three run homerun in the eight run 2nd inning for the Knights.

J. Meuchner threw five innings of one hit ball while striking out three Cadets for his third win of the season. M. Hallowell threw a scoreless 6th and 7th in relief for Sutherland.

The Knights have run their record to 10-0 and take on league rival Batavia at Dwyer Stadium on Wednesday.

Sutherland Downs Fairport 11-5 to Complete Spring Trip

Behind an offensive attack that scored in six of the seven innings and pounded out 13 hits, the Knights defeated the Red Raiders 11-5 at the Cal Ripken Experience. Hitters 2 through 6 did most of the damage with N. Flemister, B. Kaczka, Z. Salvia, G. Heyman and N. Barra each picking up two hits. Kaczka, Salvia and Heyman all scored at least two runs apiece and Kaczka and Salvia also had two and three runs batted in apiece.

N. Barra pitched 5 innings with 5 strikeouts for his third win of the season.

Sutherland finished their Spring Trip to Myrtle Beach 5-0 with four of the wins being versus teams from Class AA. Sutherland has run their record to 9-0 and plays at the Hilton Cadets on Monday.

Knights Complete Sweep of Liverpool With 7-5 Victory

The Sutherland Knights beat the Liverpool Warriors (Section III) 7 to 5 in a hard fought battle. The Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when N. Flemister hit a two-run homerun to right field. The Warriors battled back with a homerun of their own to cut the Sutherland lead in half.

In the fourth inning, Liverpool took the lead 3-2 but the lead was short lived as J. Meuchner tripled to right and then scored on A. Freida's sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Liverpool strung together three hits to take a 5-3 lead. Once again, Sutherland came roaring back when B. Kaczka walked and G. Heyman doubled to put two runners in scoring position for N. Barra, who singled to tie the game at 5. The Knights weren't finished there as J. Swisher walked with one out to put two runners on for Meuchner, who doubled to give the Knights a 7-5 lead.

Junior right-hander M. Barra shut down the Liverpool bats in the sixth and seventh for his second win of the season. Barra scattered twelve hits and struck out four Warriors while only walking one in the victory.

Meuchner finished with a double and a triple along with two runs batted in and a run scored to pace the offensive attack. N. Barra had a hit, two runs batted in and a run scored and N. Flemister had a two-run home run to round out the offensive attack.

Sutherland finishes their spring trip in Myrtle Beach tomorrow vs. Fairport at 10:00 am at the Cal Ripken Experience.

Knights Defeat EFA Blue Devils 7 to 2

The Sutherland Knights beat the Elmira Free Academy Blue Devils 7 to 2 at Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. Senior right hander M. Hallowell threw six innings of one run ball for his second win of the spring trip. Hallowell scattered five hits and struck out five Blue Devils in the victory.

Centerfielder A. Frieda led off the game with a triple to the right field gap and was knocked in by G. Heyman's RBI groundout to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Freida got things started again in the third when he led off the inning with a walk and scored on B. Kaczka's RBI single to stake Sutherland to a 2-0 lead.

EFA got on the board courtesy of a RBI double in the third inning but Sutherland tacked on four runs in the fourth when N. Barra, Freida, and Heyman all doubled and Kaczka tripled to give the Knights a 6-1 lead.

Both EFA and Sutherland tacked on another run in the seventh to round out the scoring at 7-2. Freida and Kaczka led the offense with Freida having two extra base hits and three runs scored and Kaczka getting three hits and two runs scored. Heyman also had a run scored and two runs batted in.

Sutherland now has a record of 7-0 and take on Liverpool (Section III) tomorrow at 1:00 pm in Myrtle Beach.

Sutherland Outlasts Brockport 5-3

The Sutherland Knights beat the Brockport Blue Devils 5-3 in a hard fought battle in Myrtle Beach. The Knights fell behind 1-0 in the second until B. Kaczka ripped a two run triple scoring A. Freida and G. Heyman who both singled. Z. Salvia then followed with a single scoring Kaczka giving Sutherland a 3-1 lead.

The Blue Devils battled back to tie the game in the fourth to tie the game at 3 courtesy of two hits and a Knights' miscue. Reliever M. Hallowell kept the score tied when he pitched out of a bases loaded jam he inherited in the top of the sixth by getting a groundout to end the inning.

In the sixth, Salvia doubled and gave way to pinch runner S. Pelletier who was sacrificed to third by N. Flemister. N. Barra then hit a ground ball to first that was misplayed allowing Pelletier to score and give the Knights a 4-3 lead. A double steal by pinch runner S. Lowe and N. Barra allowed the Knights to tack another run on to make it 5-3.

Reliever J. Swisher came on in the seventh inning and got a pop-up to center with two runners on to end the game and record the save. M. Hallowell got the win in relief of J. Meuchner, who pitched 5 2/3 innings for the no-decision.

Salvia led the offense with a 3 for 3 day including two doubles and Kaczka had a two run triple and a run scored. Heyman had two hits and a run scored and Freida had a single and a run scored to round out the offense.

Sutherland is now 6-0 and plays Elmira Free Academy tomorrow at 4:00 pm at Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

Sutherland Wins on Walk-off vs. Liverpool

The Sutherland Knights beat the Liverpool Warriors (Section III) 3 to 2 on a bases loaded walk-off single by N. Flemister in the bottom of the seventh inning at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. The Knights tied the score in the home half of the sixth, when J. Swisher hit a sacrifice fly and M. Barra hit a two out single scoring Flemister.

Flemister's winning hit scored CF A. Freida who led off the seventh with a walk, was bunted to second by G. Heyman and promptly stole third.

N. Barra pitched a complete game five hitter for his second win of 2010.

Sutherland is now 5-0 and will play Brockport tomorrow at 3:00 pm in Myrtle Beach.

Knights Defeat Cougars 5-3

Behind the gutsy pitching of M. Barra, the Sutherland Knights defeated divisional opponent HFL 5-3 on Thursday at Sargent Field. The Knights fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first when the Cougars strung together three straight hits. Sutherland came back to take the lead 2-1 in the home half of the first when Z. Salvia delivered a two run single to left field scoring B. Kaczka and G. Heyman.

The Knights were back at it again in the second when they used a J. Swisher single, M. Barra bunt and a Cougar miscue to go up 3-1. HFL cut the lead to 3-2 in the third thanks to three walks and a Sutherland infield error.

In the fifth, Heyman delivered a triple off the centerfield wall and scored on a Kaczka single to go up 4-2. In the sixth inning, N. Barra singled and scored on pinch hitter P. Ciaccia's two out single up the middle to go up 5-2.

HFL didn't go quietly in the seventh when they used three straight singles to cut the lead to 5-3 but N. Barra came on to relieve his brother and record a pop out to right to end the game.

M. Barra threw 6 2/3 innings scattering 10 hits and striking out 4 for the victory. N. Barra recorded the save with 1/3 innings of work. Kaczka went 2 for 3 with a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases and Salvia had a hit and two RBIs.

Sutherland is now 4-0 overall with a 3-0 record in divisional play.

Knights Beat Lancers 13-4

The Sutherland Knights baseball team beat Eastridge yesterday 13-4 at Sargent Field in Division III action. The Knights registered 15 hits with SS B. Kaczka leading the way with three hits, three runs batted in and three stolen bases. 1B Z. Salvia also had a big day at the plate with two hits including a solo homerun and three runs batted in. M. Barra, A. Freida, G. Heyman, and N. Flemister also contributed multi-hit games.

Sophomore right hander J. Meuchner threw 4.1 innings for his second win of the season. Meuchner struck out eight Lancers and allowed only one hit.

Sutherland is now 3-0 and takes on the HFL Cougars today at Sargent Field.

Knights Shutout Barons 5-0

Behind the strong pitching of junior righthander N. Barra, the Sutherland Knights shut out rival Brighton 5-0 last night at Buckland Park. Barra threw 6 1/3 innings of two hit ball to register his first win of 2010. Barra also struck out 8 Barons in the win. Senior right hander M. Hallowell came in and pitched a scoreless 2/3 of an inning to preserve the shutout.

Barra also led the way offensively with 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Third baseman J. Swisher registered two hits and a run scored and centerfielder A. Frieda had a hit and 2 RBIs to round out the offensive attack for the Knights.

Sutherland is now 2-0 and hosts Division III foes Eastridge and HFL on Wednesday and Thursday at Sargent Field.

Knights beat Irondequoit in Opener

The Sutherland Knights started the 2010 season with a 8-4 win over Irondequoit Friday in a hard fought battle in frigid temperatures. Through four innings, the game was a pitcher's duel with both teams working out of tough jams to keep the score 0-0. In the fifth the Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead when CF A. Freida singled and advanced to third on LF G. Heyman's second hit of the day. Freida then stole home off the Eagles' lefthander to give the Knights their first run of the season.

In the sixth, 1B Z. Salvia hit a long homerun to left center field to give Sutherland a 2-0 lead. Catcher N. Flemister followed with a hit by pitch and then scored on starting pitcher M. Barra's RBI single to make the score 3-0.

The Eagles took the lead in the home half of the sixth with four runs courtesy of a solo homerun, two run single and a bases loaded hit by pitch. But the Knights came back in the seventh when SS B. Kaczka tripled in a run to tie the game at 4 and Flemister followed with a suicide squeeze to give the Knights a 5-4 lead. Another steal of home for the Knights along with a two-run double by Freida capped the scoring at 8-4.

N. Barra came on in relief to throw a scoreless seventh inning to give the Knights the victory. M. Barra threw five innings, striking out five for the no-decision.

The Knights pounded out 10 hits with five players each registering two hits apiece. Freida, Heyman, Salvia, Kaczka and M. Barra all had two hits apiece with Freida also registering two RBIs.

The Knights take on league rival Brighton tonight at Buckland Park at 7:00 pm. The Knights home opener is Wednesday vs. Eastridge at Sargent Field at 4:30 pm.

Eight Knights Receive Post-Season Awards

Eight Sutherland Knights players were recognized for their efforts during the 2009 season with both Division III Monroe County All-County Selections and Exceptional Senior Game Selections.

Centerfielder J. Brill, second baseman B. Kaczka and pitcher/right fielder C. Cymerman were name to the first team. Third baseman D. Lowe, pitcher/left fielder N. Barra, and pitcher/first baseman Z. Salvia were named to the second team.

Kaczka and Brill were both nominated for selection on the New York State Class A All-State Team.

Brill, Lowe, Cymerman, pitcher R. Swisher and shortstop I. Gallagher were all chosen to participate in the Exceptional Senior All-Star Game at Frontier Field on June 14th at 6:30 pm.

Aquinas beats Sutherland 4-0 in Sectional Final

The Sutherland Knights baseball team lost 4-0 to Aquinas Institute in the Section V Class A Sectional Championship Friday at McDonough Field in Geneva. The Knights finished the season with a school record 23-4 record.

Sutherland Downs Victor in Semi-Final

The Sutherland Knights outlasted the Victor Blue Devils 6-5 yesterday in the Class A Sectional Semi-final at McDonough Park in Geneva.

Sutherland struck first in the third inning when N. Barra led off with a single, M. Barra's sacrifice bunt was misplayed and I. Gallagher bunted for a base hit to load the bases with no outs. J. Brill then delivered a two run single up the middle to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. C. Cymerman then followed with another bunt single to load the bases again. B. Kaczka's RBI groundout and D. Lowe's single extended the lead to 4-0. A wild pitch plated Kaczka to tack on another run and make it a 5-0 game.

In the fifth the Blue Devils strung together three hits and took advantage of a costly infield error to close the gap to 5-3. In the seventh, Victor was able to tie the game at 5 courtesy of three walks and two base hits.

In the home half of the seventh, Gallagher led off with a single, and was bunted to second by Brill with one out. Cymerman followed with a ground out moving Gallagher to third base with two outs. An intentional walk to Kaczka brought up Z. Salvia who followed with a walk-off single scoring Gallagher and giving Sutherland the win.

Salvia picked up the win in relief for the Knights.

The Knights now take on the #2 seeded Aquinas 'Lil Irish at McDonough Park on Friday at 7:00 pm in the Section V Class A Final.

Knights Knock Off Reds in Quarterfinals 15-0

The Sutherland Knights beat the Newark Reds 15-0 Friday at Sargent Field in the Class A Sectional Quarterfinals. The Knights pounded out 15 hits with N. Barra and J. Brill leading the way. Barra had four hits with with four runs batted in and four runs scored. Three of his four hits were for extra bases including a home run in the fourth inning. Brill also contributed four hits to go along with three runs batted in and two runs scored.

Senior lefthander C. Cymerman pitched five innings of shutout baseball with five strikeouts for his sixth win of the season. Senior reliever R. Swisher threw two innings without surrendering a run while striking out two Newark hitters to preserve the shutout.

Sutherland is now 22-3 and faces league rival Victor tomorrow at Geneva's McDonough Park in the Section V Class A Semi-finals at 4:30 pm.

N. Barra wins Birds Eye Player of the Week

Sophomore right handed pitcher and left fielder N. Barra won the Birds Eye Player of the Week for the week of May 18 - 23rd. Barra had two wins on the mound over Fairport and Victor to go along with six hits, four runs batted in, and five runs scored.

Barra is the third Sutherland player to win player of the week honors this season. C. Cymerman and B. Kaczka won it in back-to-back weeks in April 27th to May 9th.

Knights split doubleheader with Fairport

The Sutherland Knights split their doubleheader with Fairport yesterday at Sargent Field to finish the season 21-3 and tie the Pittsford Sutherland regular season record for wins.

In Game 1, N. Barra threw five innings of shutout baseball to register the 11-3 victory for the Knights. Barra struck out five Red Raiders and scattered five hits to run his record to a perfect 6-0 in 2009.

B. Kaczka had two hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in to pace the offense and Z. Salvia had two hits a run scored and a run batted in. J. Brill had a hit, two runs scored and two runs batted in to round out the offense.

In Game 2, the Red Raiders beat the Knights 3-1 with Sutherland making two costly errors and leaving 12 guys on base including seven in scoring position. Both J. Brill and Salvia continued their hot hitting with Brill registering three hits and Salvia recording two.

The loss snapped Sutherland's 10 game winning streak.

The Knights earned the #1 seed and a bye in the first round of the Class A Sectional Playoffs. The Knights will host the winner of the School of the Arts and Newark game on Friday at The Sarge. The game time is TBA.

Sutherland beats Eastridge 8-5

The Sutherland Knights defeated divisional opponent, Eastridge 8-5 at East Irondequoit HS on Friday night. M. Hallowell threw a complete game six-hitters while striking out eight Lancers for the victory. I. Gallagher led the offense with two hits including his first career homerun, a two-run shot in the fifth and a triple in the seventh. He also knocked in three runs and scored two runs.

N. and M. Barra both had two hits apiece and J. Brill had two hits, a run scored and a run batted in.

The Knights are now 20-2 and finish 10-2 in divisional play.

Knights Knock Off Blue Devils for Division III Title

The Sutherland Knights defeated Division III rival Victor yesterday 5-4 in 9 innings for the Division Title on Senior Day at Sargent Field. The Knights got on the board first in the second inning when D. Lowe hit a solo homerun to left field. The Blue Devils came back to tie it at one in the top of the third when they strung together two hits and a sacrifice bunt.

In the fourth inning Victor pulled ahead 2-1 courtesy of a two out triple and a run scoring single. Sutherland came back to put two runs on the board in the fifth courtesy of N. Barra and J. Brill's singles and two Victor miscues to take a 3-2 lead.

The Blue Devils loaded the bases in the sixth inning with no outs but only managed to only score one run to tie the game due to a failed suicide squeeze attempt.

In the seventh inning Victor had a chance to take the lead but right fielder C. Cymerman threw out the potential go ahead run at the plate to preserve the tie. In the ninth inning, the Blue Devils once again had a chance to take the lead only to have Cymerman throw out another run at the plate on a single. The Blue Devils ended up taking the lead 4-3 when they put together a two-run single to right field.

In the ninth, pinch hitter G. Heyman walked and was sacrificed to second base by I. Gallagher. J. Brill then followed with a single scoring Heyman to tie the game at 4. Cymerman then walked to bring B. Kaczka to the plate who singled to left field but Victor threw out the potential winning run at the plate to keep the game tied. N. Flemister then followed with another walk to load the bases for Lowe, who followed with a slow dribbler back to the mound that was misplayed allowing Cymerman to score and give the Knights the 5-4 victory.

N. Barra threw 2.2 innings in relief for the win to run his record to 5-0 on the season. C. Cymerman pitched 6.1 innings giving up only two earned runs for the no-decision.

J. Brill went 3 for 5 with a run batted in and I. Gallagher went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

The Knights are now 9-2 in Division III and 19-2 overall. The Division Title was the fifth straight for the Knights.

The Knights take on Eastridge at East Irondequoit High School on Friday at 4:30 pm and finish up the regular season Saturday with a doubleheader vs. Fairport at The Sarge. Game 1 is at 11:00 am

Knights Beat Barons 23-4

The Sutherland Knights beat league rival Brighton 23-4 yesterday at Buckland Park. The Knights pounded out 17 hits, which was one off their season high of 18 which they reached earlier in the season vs. Brighton. The first four hitters in the Knights lineup, J. Brill, C. Cymerman, B. Kaczka and N. Flemister, combined to go 11 for 14 with 11 runs scored and 12 runs batted in. Brill, Cymerman and Kaczka all had three hits apiece.

In addition, Z. Salvia and N. Barra had two hits apiece with Barra having three runs scored and Salvia having five runs batted in including a home run.

R. Swisher picked up his fourth win of the season in relief. Swisher came in the fourth with the bases loaded and no outs and got out of the jam while only surrendering one run. He finished with three innings pitched and four strikeouts.

The Knights are back in action tomorrow on Senior Day at The Sarge vs. Victor at 5:00 pm. The Knights will attempt to avenge an early season 4-3 loss to the Blue Devils at Victor High School.

The Knights are 18-2 and 8-2 in Division III. The Knights have a slim 1/2 game lead over the Blue Devils with two games to play for the Division III title.

Sutherland Defeats Batavia 10-6

The Sutherland Knights defeated league rival Batavia 10-6 at Dwyer Stadium on Friday night. The Knights jumped out to an early six run lead with the big blows being a N. Flemister run scoring double, and Z. Salvia two-run homerun.

The Blue Devils battled back to make it a 6-5 game through three innings. The score could have been tied but N. Barra threw out the potential tying run at the plate from left field.

In the fifth inning, Batavia took advantage of sloppy Sutherland defense to score their sixth run and tie the game. But a run scoring C. Cymerman single in the fifth, and a D. Lowe sacrifice fly in the sixth inning scoring B. Kaczka, who tripled, made the score 8-6 after six complete.

In the seventh inning, pinch runner A. Nesser scored on an errant throw on an attempted steal and J. Brill tripled and scored on a wild pitch to make the final 10-6.

Reliever M. Barra secured his second win of the season by throwing 2.1 innings of relief while striking out three and surrendering two hits. Salvia threw the sixth and seventh with three strikeouts for his first career save.

Brill and Kaczka both had two hits including a triple with two runs scored.

Sutherland travels to Buckland Park tonight to take on Division III rival the Brighton Barons at 7:00 pm.

Knights retire Mike Jones and Patrick Sargent's Numbers

The Sutherland Knights retired the numbers of two former Sutherland Knights greats in a pre-game ceremony at Sargent Field. Class of 1977 Mike Jones' number 17 jersey was retired along with Coach Patrick Sargent's number 40.

Mike Jones was the #21 overall pick in the 1977 MLB Amateur Draft and member of the 1985 Kansas City Royals, who won the World Series that year. Jones went on to win 11 games in the Major Leagues and finished fourth in the 1981 Rookie of the Year voting. At Sutherland, Jones was voted All-State and All-American in 1977.

Coach Sargent coached Varsity baseball at Sutherland for 20 seasons and was a teacher in the district for 28 years. Sargent's teams won Sectional Championships in 1982, 1986 and 1987. Coach Sargent passed away in 2000 and the Knights' home field was named Sargent Field in his memory.

Knights beat Leopards 15-0

The Sutherland Knights defeated the Greece Odyssey Leopards 15-0 yesterday at Sargent Field. The Knights pounded out 14 hits with five players having multi-hit games. D. Lowe led the way with two hits including a two-run homerun to go along with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Z. Salvia had two hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored and N. Flemister had two hits, two runs batted in and two runs scored. J. Brill and B. Kaczka also contributed two hits apiece.

R. Swisher pitched a complete game two hitter for his third win of the season. Swisher had a perfect game through three complete and a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings and only allowed three base runners and did not register a walk.

The Knights are now 16-2 overall and 6-2 in Division III. The Knights travel to Batavia on Friday in a 5:00 pm divisional game and travel to Fairport on Saturday for an 11:00 am start.

Knights Squeak By Eagles 5-4

The Sutherland Knights won a hard fought battle witht the Irondequoit Eagles 5-4 yesterday at West Irondequoit High School. Sutherland got on the board first in the second inning with a two out rally that saw the Knights record four straight hits and three runs. Z. Salvia got everything going with a double to left and both N. and M. Barra followed with run scoring base hits. C. Cymerman's single scored M. Barra and made the score 3-0.

In the fourth, N. Flemister doubled to the gap in left with two outs and scored on a Eagles miscue in the infield to make the score 4-0. In the third though the Eagles came storming back to 4-3 with two on only to have third baseman D. Lowe turn an unassisted double play to end the threat.

In the fourth, M. Barra reached base on an error, advanced to third on Cymerman's infield single and scored on J. Brill's sacrifice fly to make the score 5-3. The Eagles came back to put another run on the board and make the score 5-4 but couldn't get any closer as N. Barra sat down the final six batters in order for the victory.

N. Barra threw a complete game striking out for while giving up two earned runs for his fourth win of the season. Barra also had a run scoring single and a run scored.

Z. Salvia had three hits and a run scored to pace the offense. Cymerman had two hits and a run batted in and M. Barra had a run scoring double and two runs scored.

The Knights are now 15-2 and take on Greece Odyssey on Wednesday in Division III action. Wednesday also will feature a pre-game ceremony honoring late Sutherland coach Patrick Sargent and ex-major leaguer and 1977 Sutherland grad Mike Jones.

Sutherland Sweeps Pal-Mac & Newark, WinsTournament

The Sutherland Knights won the 7th Annual Newark Tournament Saturday with wins over Pal-Mac and Newark. In Game 1, the Knights pounded out 15 hits and beat the Red Raiders 14-4. N. Flemister led the offense with four hits including a grand slam in the first, a two-run single in the first, and a two run double in the second. Flemister finished with eight runs batted in and three runs scored and G. Heyman had two hits and two runs scored.

Junior M. Hallowell pitched a complete game striking out six for the victory.

In Game 2, the Knights took on host Newark in the championship game and came away with a 9-0 victory. B. Kaczka had two two-run homeruns to pace the offense and N. Barra had a two-run homerun in the five run sixth inning. Kaczka finished with three hits and three runs scored to go along with his four runs batted in and Barra had two hits, two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Sophomore Z. Salvia threw a complete game two-hitter while striking out nine Reds' hitters for his second win of 2009.

The Knights are now 14-2 overall and 5-2 in Division III.

Sutherland Upends Mendon 7-1

The Pittsford Sutherland Knights knocked off cross-town rival the Pittsford Mendon Vikings 7-1 Friday at Sargent Field. Sutherland pounded out seven hits and stole eight bases to put runs on the board in each of the last five innings.

In the second inning the Knights got on the board courtesy of back-to-back two out singles by N. Barra and G. Heyman and an infield miscue followed scoring Barra. In the third, B. Kaczka walked to lead off the inning and scored on N. Flemister's double to the gap in left. Singles by D. Lowe and Z. Salvia plated Flemister and a sacrifice fly by Barra made the score 4-0.

In the fourth inning, I. Gallagher singled and stole second and scored on an error to push the lead to 5-0. A Z. Salvia single, and stolen base by pinch runner A. Nesser put a runner in scoring position in the fifth inning for Heyman who singled to score Nesser and make the score 6-0.

In the sixth, Kaczka walked and stole second and third and scored on Flemister's second run scoring hit of the day to make the score 7-0. The Vikings managed to push one across in the sixth but could get no closer as the final was 7-1.

Senior lefthander C. Cymerman pitched a complete game three hitter with six strikeouts for his fifth win of the season.

Flemister led the offensive with two hits including a double and two runs batted in to go along with one run scored. Salvia also contributed two hits, a run scored and a run batted in.

Sutherland is now 12-2 and 5-2 in Division III.

Knights Shutout Lancers 7-0

The Sutherland Knights ran their record to 11-2 when N. Barra threw a complete game shutout yesterday at Sargent Field defeating divisional opponent Eastridge 7-0. Barra only gave up four hits and struck out eight Lancers for his third win of 2009.

B. Kaczka provided the offensive punch with a run scoring double in the first inning and a three-run home run in the third inning. Kaczka also singled in the fifth, stole two bases and scored three runs for the Knights.

I. Gallagher had a solid day at the plate with two hits and two runs scored. N. Flemister and Z. Salvia also contributed run scoring singles to round out the offense.

The Knights take on divisional rival Mendon tomorrow at Sargent Field at 5:00 pm.

Sutherland Splits Divisional Games

The Sutherland Knights defeated divisional rival, the Brighton Barons, 14-4 at Sargent Field Friday. The Knights scored early and often by putting up seven runs in the first inning and never looking back. Sutherland pounded out a season high 18 hits with every starter registering at least one hit and six starters having multi-hit games.

B. Kaczka, N. Flemister, D. Lowe and N. Barra led the way with three hits apiece and at least two runs scored apiece. Flemister's three run homerun in the first gave the Knights a 3-0 lead.

C. Cymerman and J. Brill both registered two hits to round out the offense.

Cymerman pitched six innings with four strikeouts for his fourth win of the season.

On Monday, Sutherland traveled to Victor High School to take on the Blue Devils and came up on the short end of a 4-3 ballgame. The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead but couldn't hold it as Victor scored a run in each of the last four innings for the victory. D. Lowe led the offense with two hits and two runs batted in.

The Knights are currently 3-2 in Divisional Play and 10-2 overall. Sutherland hosts tough divisional match-ups this week with Eastridge today and Mendon on Friday. Both games are at Sargent Field and are 5:00 pm starts.

Sutherland Defeats League Rival Batavia 6-3

The Sutherland Knights defeated one of their Division III rivals, the Batavia Blue Devils, in a hardfought battle 6-3 at Sargent Field yesterday. The Knights found themselves behind 2-0 after three innings but battled back to tie the game in the fourth inning. An I. Gallagher single, walk to B. Kaczka and a N. Flemister hit by pitch loaded the bases for N. and M. Barra who both followed with walks of their own to tie the game at 2.

In the fifth, the Blue Devils tacked on another run courtesy of a homerun to right centerfield to take a 3-2 lead. But once again the Knights came back to tie it at 3 when J. Brill singled, was bunted over to second by Gallagher, stole third and scored on a fielder's choice ahead of the throw to homeplate.

In the sixth Sutherland would take the lead for good. D. Lowe led off the inning with a long fly ball to centerfield that was misplayed allowing Lowe to reach second base. Lowe then stole third and a Z. Salvia groundball was misplayed putting runners at the corners with no outs. A stolen base by pinch runner T. Kay put two runners in scoring position for N. Barra who singled to right and scored Lowe and Kay to put the Knights up 5-3.

N. Barra gave way to pinch runner A. Nesser, who promptly stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball to centerfield and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-3.

R. Swisher, who came on in relief of Salvia with one out in the fifth, struck out the side in the seventh to preserve the victory for Sutherland. Swisher pitched 2 2/3 innings of no-hit baseball with five strikeouts to get his second win of the season.

Sutherland is now 2-1 in Division III and 9-1 overall.

The Knights host another league rival, the Brighton Barons, on Friday at Sargent Field at 4:30 pm

Knights knock off Athena 13-3

Behind a 12 hit offensive attack, the Knights knocked off the Greece Athena Trojans 13-3 at Sargent Field on Monday. Second baseman B. Kaczka led the offense with a first inning two run homerun to left and a two run double to left in the second inning. Centerfielder J. Brill also went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and starting pitcher C. Cymerman went 2 for 4 with a bases clearing double. Third baseman D. Lowe and first baseman Z. Salvia each chipped in two hits apiece to round out the hitting attack.

Cymerman threw six innings while striking out five Trojan hitters for his third win of the season. N. Barra pitched a perfect seventh for the Knights.

Sutherland beats Fairport 9-7 to end Spring Trip

The Sutherland Knights beat the Fairport Red Raiders 9-7 to finish their spring trip undefeated with six wins. The game was scoreless until the third inning when the Knights put up five runs courtesy of walks to M. Barra, and J. Brill and base hits by B. Kaczka and D. Lowe. The Knights also benefited from two costly Red Raider errors to build the 5-0 lead.

In the fourth Sutherland was back at it with another run when two more Fairport errors put runners on base for N. Flemister who singled in a run.

Fairport came storming back to erase a big deficit in the home half of the fifth inning when they tied the game at 7. But in the sixth Brill led off with a triple to the right field gap and scored on Kaczka's sacrifice fly to left field to make the score 8-7. In the seventh, Sutherland put a much needed insurance run on the board when another Fairport miscue along with a M. Barra single put pinch runner T. Kay on third with two outs. A passed ball then scored Kay to make the score 9-7.

Relief pitcher M. Barra struck out two in the seventh to preserve the victory for Sutherland. Barra picked up his first varsity win with 2 2/3 innings of work.

Both Brill and Kaczka had two hits apiece with Brill scoring three runs and Kaczka picking up two runs batted in. D. Lowe also chipped in a double and two runs batted in to help the offense.

Sutherland's record is now 8-1 going into three big home games at Sargent Field next week vs. Greece Athena (Mon), Batavia (Wednesday) and Brighton (Friday)

Sutherland beats Brockport 3-2

Behind the strong pitching of sophomore Z. Salvia, the Sutherland Knights ran their Myrtle Beach record to 5-0 with a 3-2 victory over Brockport at Cal Ripken Experience. Salvia pitched a complete game scattering nine hits while striking out five Blue Devil hitters and only walking one.

Sutherland fell behind 2-0 early but battled back to take a 3-2 lead when the Knights put together five straight hits in the fifth inning by M. Barra, C. Cymerman, J. Brill, I. Gallagher, and B. Kaczka.

The Blue Devils did threaten in both the sixth and the seventh but Salvia pitched out of trouble on both occasions. In the sixth, Brockport loaded the bases with on out, only to have Salvia get a ground out and pop out to end the inning. The first out of the inning was recorded by Brill who reached over the fence in right centerfield to rob a potential go-ahead homerun. In the seventh, Brockport put the tying run on but the threat was erased by a game ending double play by Gallagher.

Brill had two hits and Kaczka had a hit and two runs batted in to pace the offense.

Sutherland is now 7-1 and faces Fairport on Friday at the Cal Ripken Experience.

Sutherland blanks Brockport and Holley in doubleheader

The Sutherland Knights ran their record to 6-1 with a sweep of Brockport and Holley in Myrtle Beach. In Game 1, Sutherland defeated Brockport 9-0. Shortstop I. Gallagher, rightfielder M. Barra and designated hitter N. Barra each had two hits apiece with both of Gallagher's hits being doubles. Gallagher also had two runs batted in and two runs scored and N. Barra had two runs scored.

Catcher N. Flemister and centerfielder J. Brill also contributed two runs batted in apiece.

Senior lefthander C. Cymerman pitched six innings of shutout ball while giving up four hits and striking out five for his second win of the season. Junior M. Hallowell pitched a perfect seventh in relief.

In Game 2, the Knights blanked Holley 11-0. Freshman J. Meuchner threw a one hitter while striking out three for his first varsity win. M. Barra had two hits and four runs batted in to pace the offense and second baseman B. Kaczka had two runs scored and three runs batted in.

Sutherland defeats Fairport 6-1 in Myrtle Beach

Behind a strong pitching performance of sophomore right-hander N. Barra, the Sutherland Knights defeated the Fairport Red Raiders 6-1 at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach. Barra pitched a complete game four hitter with six strikeouts and two walks. Barra sat down nine of the last ten hitters he faced for his second win of the season.

The Knights were down 1-0 with two outs in the home half of the fourth, when third baseman D. Lowe doubled and first baseman Z. Salvia singled to tie the score at 1. Barra followed with a ground rule double to left field to put two runners in scoring position for pinch hitter M. Hallowell, who hit a ground ball that was misplayed allowing both runners to score and make the score 3-1.

Right fielder C. Cymerman followed with a long two run homerun to right field to make the score 5-1. It stayed that way until the sixth when centerfielder J. Brill doubled to left scoring pinch runner T.Kay and making the final score 6-1.

Brill finished 2 for 4 with a run batted in and second baseman B. Kaczka went 2 for 3

Sutherland is now 4-1 and plays a doubleheader tomorrow vs. Brockport at 3:00 pm and Holley at 6:00 pm.

Knights knock off New Britain 10-8

The Knights started their spring break trip off with a 10-8 victory over New Britain High School 10-8 at Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC. Sutherland pounded out 10 hits in the win with third baseman D. Lowe registering a 2 for 3 day with a bases clearing double in the first inning and a solo homerun in the third inning. Lowe also walked and scored three runs.

Centerfielder J. Brill had two hits, two runs scored and four stolen bases and designated hitter A. Frieda had a run scoring triple and a run scored.

R. Swisher pitched 4.1 innings, striking out five hitters for his first win of the season. C. Cymerman faced two batters in the seventh registering a strikeout and a groundout for his first save of the season.

Sutherland is now 3-1.

Sutherland Beats Odyssey 18-3

Behind a 16-hit attack at Greece Apollo Middle School, the Sutherland Knights beat the Greece Odyssey Leopards 18-3. The Knights had six of their nine starters record multi-hit games with junior catcher N. Flemister leading the way with a 3 for 5 day with 5 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Two of Flemister's hits were run scoring doubles.

Also recording two hits apiece were sophomore second baseman B. Kaczka, senior shortstop I. Gallagher, senior centerfielder J. Brill, sophomore designated hitter Z. Salvia, and senior rightfielder C. Cymerman. Kaczka and Gallagher also had two runs scored and two runs batted in apiece.

Sophomore right hander N. Barra recorded his first varsity win with 5 innings of 2 hit ball while striking out 9 Odyssey hitters. Offensively Barra also registered two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Sutherland is now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in Divisional play and takes on rival Pittsford Mendon today at Mendon High School at 4:30 pm.
