Sutherland Bullpen, VanderZwaag Stymie Aquinas in 6-3 Victory




Behind the strong pitching of the Sutherland bullpen, the Knights defeated Aquinas Institute 6-3 at Sargent Field.  Jack Wilson, Jared Whitaker and Robbie Doggett, retired 15 of the 18 hitters they faced without allowing a base hit or a run.   Wilson picked up the win with 2.1 innings of relief and Robbie Doggett threw a perfect seventh for his 3rd save of the season.  Whitaker chipped in 1.2 innings of shutout ball.

The Knights fell behind 3-0 early but used a bases loaded walk by Matt Marchiony, a John Ragus RBI single, Ben Swisher 2-run single and numerous Lil Irish infield miscues to overcome the deficit.  Michael VanderZwaag had 2 hits and 3 runs scored and Michael Pringle had 2 hits, 3 stolen bases and a run scored to lead the offense.   VanderZwaag also made a highlight reel catch in centerfield to take away extra bases and keep a 3-3 game tied.

The Knights are now 7-1 and face Rush-Henrietta at Roth Middle School tomorrow.

Knights lose to Herndon 6 to 3.

The Knights lost to the Herndon Hornets 6 to 3 at Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.   Sutherland left 12 runners on base offensively and walked 6 batters in the loss.   Michael VanderZwaag went 4 for 4 for the Knights.

Sutherland is now 6-1 overall and plays Aquinas at home on Monday.

Sutherland Beats Washington-Lee 10-5

The Sutherland Knights defeated the Washington-Lee Generals (VA) 10-5 today at Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.   The Knights fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first but Robbie Zielinski hit a bases clearing double to make the score 3-1.   John Ragus singled to left to put runners at the corners with 1 out.   A double steal attempt plated Zielinski to give the Knights a 4-1 lead.

In the 2nd, Christian Toscano doubled and Forrest Hurlbut's bunt was misplayed to put runners at the corners and no outs.  A Michael Pringle groundout and another double steal pushed two more runs across to make the score 6-1.

The Generals scored a run in the third but Sutherland answered with three more thanks to a Matt Marchiony 2 run single and passed ball to make the score 9-2.  W-L scored three more runs in the fifth to close the gap to 9-5 but the Knights used another Toscano single and two W-L miscues to make the final score 10-5.

Alec Vaules threw 5 innings for the victory and Robbie Doggett threw two scoreless innings for his second save of the season.

Toscano went 3-3 to lead the offense and both VanderZwaag and Zielinski had 2 hits.

Knights down Red Raiders 9-3

The Sutherland Knights defeated cross town rival Fairport 9-3 at Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.    Senior right-hander Michael VanderZwaag threw a complete game 4-hitter for his second win of 2014.
 
Michael Pringle's single in the second inning gave the Knights a 1-0 lead.  Senior leftfielder Forrest Hurlbut broke open a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with a two-run double to right field and then scored on a double steal to make the score 4-1.  Two runs by the Red Raiders in the fourth cut the lead to 4-3 but a double by Ben Swisher and single by Robbie Zielinski put the Knights up 5-3 in the fifth.  Another double steal scored Zielinski and made the score 6-3.

Hits by Swisher and Hurlbut along with numerous Fairport miscues allowed Sutherland to tack on three more runs in the seventh and put the Red Raiders away for good. 

Hurlbut went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and Swisher went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored to lead the offense.

The Knights play Washington Lee tomorrow at 3 pm.

Knights down the Chesterfield Rams 6-3

Behind a strong showing from the Knights bullpen, the Sutherland Knights defeated the Chesterfield Rams (SC) 6-3.   The Knights got on the board in the first when Drew Reddish reached base on an error and scored on Michael VanderZwaag's double to left field.   A Robbie Zielinski single to left plated VanderZwaag and made the score 2-0 at the end of 1.

The Rams scored one run in the second and then loaded the bases with no outs in the third before reliever Jack Wilson pitched out of the jam to hold Chesterfield scoreless.  In the home half of the third, a VanderZwaag double followed by a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases for John Ragus, who then doubled down the left field line to make the score 5-1.   An Alec Vaules double down the right field line scored Ragus to make the score 6-1.

The Rams scored 2 runs in the fifth but could get no closer as Jared Whitaker and Robbie Doggett threw two shutout innings to end the game.  Doggett's scoreless 7th inning was his first career Varsity save.   Wilson, Whitaker and Doggett threw 5 innings of relief while only surrendering 2 runs.   Wilson's scoreless 3rd and 4th innings earned him his first career Varsity win. 

Ragus led the offense with two hits, three runs batted in and a run scored.

The Knights are now 4-0 and play Fairport tomorrow at 3 pm in Myrtle Beach.
