Knights down Red Raiders 9-3

The Sutherland Knights defeated cross town rival Fairport 9-3 at Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.    Senior right-hander Michael VanderZwaag threw a complete game 4-hitter for his second win of 2014.
Michael Pringle's single in the second inning gave the Knights a 1-0 lead.  Senior leftfielder Forrest Hurlbut broke open a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with a two-run double to right field and then scored on a double steal to make the score 4-1.  Two runs by the Red Raiders in the fourth cut the lead to 4-3 but a double by Ben Swisher and single by Robbie Zielinski put the Knights up 5-3 in the fifth.  Another double steal scored Zielinski and made the score 6-3.

Hits by Swisher and Hurlbut along with numerous Fairport miscues allowed Sutherland to tack on three more runs in the seventh and put the Red Raiders away for good.

Hurlbut went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and Swisher went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored to lead the offense.

The Knights play Washington Lee tomorrow at 3 pm.

Knights down the Chesterfield Rams 6-3

Behind a strong showing from the Knights bullpen, the Sutherland Knights defeated the Chesterfield Rams (SC) 6-3.   The Knights got on the board in the first when Drew Reddish reached base on an error and scored on Michael VanderZwaag's double to left field.   A Robbie Zielinski single to left plated VanderZwaag and made the score 2-0 at the end of 1.

The Rams scored one run in the second and then loaded the bases with no outs in the third before reliever Jack Wilson pitched out of the jam to hold Chesterfield scoreless.  In the home half of the third, a VanderZwaag double followed by a hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases for John Ragus, who then doubled down the left field line to make the score 5-1.   An Alec Vaules double down the right field line scored Ragus to make the score 6-1.

The Rams scored 2 runs in the fifth but could get no closer as Jared Whitaker and Robbie Doggett threw two shutout innings to end the game.  Doggett's scoreless 7th inning was his first career Varsity save.   Wilson, Whitaker and Doggett threw 5 innings of relief while only surrendering 2 runs.   Wilson's scoreless 3rd and 4th innings earned him his first career Varsity win.

Ragus led the offense with two hits, three runs batted in and a run scored.

The Knights are now 4-0 and play Fairport tomorrow at 3 pm in Myrtle Beach.
