The Sutherland Knights defeated rival Brighton 5-4 yesterday at Frontier Field in the Section V Class A Championship. The Knights jumped the Barons right out of the gate when Robbie Zielinski singled, Drew Reddish walked and Michael Pringle followed with a two-run triple to right centerfield to make the score 2-0. An RBI groundout by Michael VanderZwaag put Sutherland up 3-0 going into the bottom of the first.
The score stayed that way until the fourth inning when Jimmy Murray doubled to the leftfield gap scoring VanderZwaag and making the score 4-0.
The Barons cut the lead to 4-1 before the Knights used a Pringle double to leftfield scoring Saagar Menon , who had walked, making the score 5-1. Brighton continued to chip away with a run in the fifth and the sixth to narrow the margin to 5 to 3 going into the seventh. In the home half of the seventh, the Knights got two quick outs including a running catch in left field on the warning track by Reddish before Brighton strung together 3 straight hits to make the score 5 to 4 with the tying and winning runs on base. But VanderZwaag got a groundball to Zielinski who flipped to Menon to end the game.
VanderZwaag, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player, pitched a complete game scattering seven hits while surrendering 3 earned runs in the victory. This was VanderZwaag's second win of sectionals.
Pringle was the offensive standout with 3 hits including a 2 run triple, RBI double and a run scored.
The championship was the 8th in the last 10 years and the 12th Section V Baseball Championship in Sutherland history. This ties Sutherland with Wellsville for the most baseball championships in Section V history.
