Knights lose 2-1 in State Semi-Final

Saturday saw the end of the Sutherland Knights miraculous post-season run with a loss to eventual State Champion Bayport Blue Point at Union Endicott High School.    The Phantoms took advantage of a Sutherland infield miscue and a suspect balk call for both of their runs.   Sutherland battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the seventh, as they have done all post-season, thanks to a Christian Toscano double and Jimmy Murray RBI single but could get no closer as they lost 2-1.

Michael VanderZwaag continued his string of outstanding starts on the mound throwing a complete game five-hitter while only surrendering 1 earned run in the loss.

Sutherland finished the season 17-9.

Knights Rally to Defeat Albion 3-2 in Far West Regional, Advance to NYS Final Four

The Sutherland Knights defeated Section VI's Albion Purple Eagles 3-2 in the Far West Regional and advanced to the school's fourth NYS Class A Final Four in the past seven seasons.   Sutherland trailed the Purple Eagles 2-0 with 1 out and the bases empty before staging their second seventh inning rally in the 2014 postseason.

Jimmy Murray began the comeback with a single through the left side with 1 out in the seventh.   Pinch runner Nate Richardson came on to run for Murray and advanced to 3rd base on a failed pick off attempt.  John Ragus followed with a pop-up to second base that was dropped putting runners at the corners.   Will Groark came on to run for Ragus and was advanced to second on Saagar Menon's misplayed groundball, which scored Richardson to make the score 2-1.   A walk to Robbie Zielinski loaded the bases for Drew Reddish, who on a 3-2 count lined a sharp single to left field scoring Groark and Menon to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.

Senior righthander Michael VanderZwaag then retired Albion on a strikeout, and two groundouts to preserve the victory for the Knights.   VanderZwaag pitched a complete game six hitter with two strikeouts and 1 earned run for his third win of the postseason.  VanderZwaag has given up 4 earned runs in 21 innings this postseason.

Sutherland now travels to Binghamton to play defending New York State Class A Champion Bayport-Blue Point on Saturday at 10 am at Union Endicott High School in the NYS Semi-Final.

Sutherland is now 17-8.

12th Championship at Frontier Field

The Sutherland Knights defeated rival Brighton 5-4 yesterday at Frontier Field in the Section V Class A Championship.    The Knights jumped the Barons right out of the gate when Robbie Zielinski singled, Drew Reddish walked and Michael Pringle followed with a two-run triple to right centerfield to make the score 2-0.   An RBI groundout by Michael VanderZwaag put Sutherland up 3-0 going into the bottom of the first.

The score stayed that way until the fourth inning when Jimmy Murray doubled to the leftfield gap scoring VanderZwaag and making the score 4-0.

The Barons cut the lead to 4-1 before the Knights used a Pringle double to leftfield scoring Saagar Menon , who had walked, making the score 5-1.   Brighton continued to chip away with a run in the fifth and the sixth to narrow the margin to 5 to 3 going into the seventh.    In the home half of the seventh, the Knights got two quick outs including a running catch in left field on the warning track by Reddish before Brighton strung together 3 straight hits to make the score 5 to 4 with the tying and winning runs on base.    But VanderZwaag got a groundball to Zielinski who flipped to Menon to end the game.

VanderZwaag, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player, pitched a complete game scattering seven hits while surrendering 3 earned runs in the victory.    This was VanderZwaag's second win of sectionals.

Pringle was the offensive standout with 3 hits including a 2 run triple, RBI double and a run scored.

The championship was the 8th in the last 10 years and the 12th Section V Baseball Championship in Sutherland history.   This ties Sutherland with Wellsville for the most baseball championships in Section V history.

Knights Defeat HFL 8-3 in Class A Semi-Final

Sophomore right-hander Alec Vaules threw a complete game 4 hitter with 6 strikeouts for his fifth win of the season.   Vaules didn't walk a batter and all three runs allowed were unearned.
